Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What sort of game is Star Sonata 2?

Star Sonata 2 is a massively multiplayer space MMO with arcade controls similar to Asteroids, Star Control, or Escape Velocity.

Q: Is it free to play?

Yes, it's free to play.  There is no level cap and no trial period.

Q: What's the premium subscription?

The premium subscription is optional, and opens up some additional areas you might want to visit after you've been playing for a long time already.  Most notably is Wild Space, an area where the best space stations and colonies can be built.  Free players can still build stations and colonies in Earthforce Space.

Q: is the game Pay to Win?

No, as far as we can help it.  There are no individual upgrades that can be bought to get advantages based on how much money you spend. There is additional character slots and a Neural Boost to Tech 20 but these are more pay for convenience then any real advantage. Paying a subscription gets access to more opportunities, but they are the same opportunities that most everyone else has.  Most players who have played for only a couple months are free to play, while most players who have been playing for more than 6 months are all premium subscribers.

Q: How big is Star Sonata 2?

Star Sonata 2 has over 7,000 systems in the game, tens of thousands of different items, thousands of enemies, and as of 2024, our trailing monthly number of active characters is over 4,000.

Q: How does the skill system work?

You earn 5 skill points every time you go up a level.  Leveling in Star Sonata is pretty quick, and you can expect to go up multiple levels a day if you are doing missions or killing things.  Skill points can be spent on 173 different skills, for a lot of different variation in character builds.

Q: Is there PvP?

Yes, there is PvP in certain areas.  Star Sonata is split into PvP and non-PvP layers.  There are lots of places you can go to completely avoid PvP, but all of the main building areas and Perilous Space, where much content is all PvP outside of zones. In addition, there are several arenas where people can freely PvP with others where no items losses or damage can occur, so it's just for fun and experimenting.

Q: How long to people play Star Sonata 2?

Many of our players have been playing the same characters since Star Sonata 1 first launched, almost 20 years ago.  People love Star Sonata, join the fun today!
