There are a wide variety of races found in Star Sonata, varying from the common assortment of [[Terran|humans]] - the law-enforcing, the pirating, and sometimes the clinically insane - to the many aliens from our universe, and others. These races generally come in three types, or a mix; ''ancient'', ''mission'', and ''combat''.

''Ancient'' pertains to the races of yesteryear that were destroyed by either the environment...or something hostile. These races have their own gear sets that can be excavated by colonies if a ''ruin'' is picked up on the settled planet. Ancient ruins from extinct races include [[Bule]], [[Vazaha]], [[Faranji]], and [[Mzungu]]. However, [[UrQa]] and [[Paxians|Paxian]] ruins can also be found at a much rarer rate.

''Mission'' relates to the races that are approached for missions. The pilot is asked for help, and can offer their expertise to solve the individual's or group's problem, or problems. These races are generally that of the [[Paxian]] or [[Terran|human]] race, though it may be possible that some other foregoing aliens out there have requests for our passing pilots.

''Combat'' can refer to the classes content on making the lives of others hell, be it due to hostility and greed, or the upholding of social order. Such races can include the many law-enforcing or pirating [[Terran|humans]], unknown aliens around the universe like the [[Blue Pirates|Blue]], [[Kalthi]], and the [[Volcom Pirates|Volcoms]], or the dreaded [[UrQa|UrQuan]] covenant.

The ancient races of [[Bule]], [[Mzungu]], [[Vazaha]] and [[Faranji]] always seem to have been defeated by the [[UrQa]] by the time humans enter the wormhole to the new universe, escaping only to leave behind their ruins and small [[UrQa|UrQuan]] fleets.
